What You Need To Know

Before Learning to Drive

The minimum age which you can legally drive a car on the public roads is 17. If you are disabled and in receipt of mobility allowance, the minimum age is 16. Until the day you pass the practical test you are not allowed to drive on your own. You will need a provisional driving licence You must not drive until you have received your provisional licence.

The Theory Test

The areas covered by the Theory Test include:

  • Driver Attitude
  • Traffic Signs and Regulations
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour
  • Safety and environmental aspects of vehicles

In November 2002 the Driving Theory Test was changed. In addition to answering 35 multiple choice questions, you are also tested for hazard perception skills. As from 3rd September 2007 the number of questions for the Theory Test will increase to 50. You will need to pass both elements of the test at the same sitting to pass your theory test. This test is taken using a computer at your local Driving Standards Agency Theory Test Centre (Scarborough or Hull).

The Day of the Practical Test

The purpose of the Practical Driving Test is to find out whether you can drive safely, without supervision, on the roads. You will not pass unless you can show the examiner that you have this ability.

You should ensure you have the following documents with you

  • Test Appointment card/letter
  • Driving Licence – both paper and photographic

The test vehicle should also display a Valid Tax Disc and ā€˜L’ plates front and rear. The Driving School Car conforms to all necessary regulations for a Driving Test.

At the start of the Practical Test (which lasts 35 – 45 mins.) you are required to prove you meet the minimum eyesight requirement by reading a number plate at 20.5 mtrs. (67ft.) in good daylight. If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this these must be worn throughout the test and at all times when driving.

You will then be required to answer two questions from the "Show Me Tell Me" list. The instruction for this is an ongoing part of your instruction.
